Google Will Let You Opt In To YouTube’s New Web UI, No Extension Required

iconHave you checked out YouTube’s swanky new interface yet? If you have, perhaps you went through the somewhat cumbersome method of enabling it by manually editing cookies with this Chrome extension. That’s a bit much for a visual tweak that’s hidden in fullscreen anyway, but after people around the web showed an impressive amount of interest in the revised player, it looks like Google went and put in a user-accessible switch instead.

Notorious leaker @LlabTooFeR took to his Twitter account today to share a couple of screenshots from an upcoming software update for the One M9, which is scheduled to start rolling out as early as next week.

This upgrade carries version number 1.40 and appears to be primarily aimed at improving the many battery issues that users have been complaining about recently — so now they’re handset should finally last more than a day on a single charge.

Windows 10 Mobile Maps app will let you download offline maps over 3G/LTE

image

WP8.1 vs W10M

A week ago we complained that Windows Phone includes a number of hidden data caps which can bite you when you are out and about and away from WIFI, including not being able to download offline maps data.

It seems fixing this issue was already on Microsoft’s list, as the new Maps app in Windows 10 Mobile includes a toggle which says:

Maps will only be downloaded on free Wi-Fi or unlimited cellular data plans until you turn this on.  (You may incur additional charges when using metered connections.)

The feature is part of many which has seen Microsoft slowly loosen its grip and control on Windows Phone users, best exemplified by a simple toggle which lets even average users side-load applications easily. Hopefully we will see many more such user-orientated features in the final release of the OS, removing some of the objections android users may have to using a relatively locked down OS.

“OK Google” From Any Screen On The Galaxy S6 And S6 Edge Appears To Be Returning, Can Possibly Be Forced Back On

DSC08396

A couple weeks back, we reported on a widespread problem with OK Google “From any screen” (AKA “OK Google Everywhere”) on the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. Namely, it was gone. While the hotword still worked from the Google Now Launcher and other third party launchers with such functionality hacked in, most S6 and S6 Edge owners were unable to to use the “from any screen” functionality because the option simply disappeared.

Hey Flipkart, its the Microsoft Lumia 640, not the Lumia RM-1077

image

The Microsoft Lumia 640 is a Flipkart exclusive in India, which we would normally hope would mean that the company would spend some time getting their promotions right for the device.

Unfortunately looking at the listing of the device on Flipkart one would be hard pressed to know the handset we are looking at is the Lumia 640, with Flipkart only naming the device by its internal designation, the RM-1077.

Fortunately if one search for the Lumia 640 it does bring up listings for RM-1077, but I can certainly see potential buyers being confused as to whether they reached the right handset.

Hopefully Flipkart can fix this issue, which I think defuses some of the marketing for which could be a very popular windows phone.

Thanks Aaron for the tip.
