Google Duo hits 100 million downloads, doubles user base in last two months

Google’s Duo app has reached a new milestone. Amit Fulay, Head of Product at Google (Duo and Allo), has announced on Twitter that the video calling app has been downloaded more than 100 million times so far.
High quality video with simple design is resonating with users. Pleased to see #GoogleDuo hit 100M, 11 months since launch. Lots more to do

Duo was announced back at last year’s Google I/O and then released in the month of August. It reached five million downloads in the first week and 50 million just a couple of months ago in May. This means that the app was downloaded 50 million times just in the last two months alone.
Latest Google Allo update will let you start a Duo call inside your chat
Unfortunately, we don’t know exactly how many of the 100 million users who downloaded Duo are actually using it on a regular basis. Google hasn’t announced this number, which is the one that’s really significant (even if an app is later uninstalled, still counts towards the total downloads figure).
When launched, Duo only allowed you to to make video calls. To keep up with the competition, Google rolled out an update in March that brought audio calls to the app. While this may have helped increase its user base, Duo also started appearing pre-installed on phones as part of the Google Suite of apps last December, replacing Hangouts. These installs also count as downloads in the Play Store, meaning not all of Duo’s installs come directly from people seeking out the app in Google Play, but rather, simply activating a phone.
As we said above, until Google reveals active usage numbers, who knows how popular it really is.
